A New Form of Piracy
Most days, I manage to love my country enough to be able to live in it, because A) even though it's done some really shitty things throughout its history (and especially of late), it's done some great things as well, and I keep hoping that the balance will be restored again; and B) it's my country, and loyalty works that way.
But this morning I read about these prison ships the government is doing its best to keep secret, and I don't even know how to feel or what to say about this latest atrocious barbarity, except OH MY GOD.

Like you, I love my country as well, and like you, I feel it is important to utilize that right of free speech which we have been granted. The article smacks a little of the Civil War prison ships, and of these as well: http://longislandgenealogy.com/prison.html
The only large difference is that they are not held on these ships for years, as they were the other two cases. Still, this gives one pause for thought. Guantanamo has not been the panacea that it was supposed to be, and the calls for its closure are ringing louder than ever. It seems as this method of detention is about to receive the same feedback.
I wish that the gov't would get its act together and learn to be able to tell the difference between the real terrorists, those who truly threaten us, and the innocent. They have made far too many mistakes on this level. We could have been a lot smarter about how we went about this....
OH MY GOD, pretty much sums it up. I can't wait for Bush and Cheney to be out on the street. Unfortunately, I don't think the situation will immediately correct itself once we have a new president. If McCain wins, it'll be business as usual. If Obama wins, his lack of foreign policy expertise will be used to scare him into keeping these people imprisoned. Either way, our country sucks for this kind of behavior we so rapidly and hypocritically condemn in others.
