People are sometimes surprised or disappointed by my interest in war literature. It's gruesome and depressing; why would I want to study stuff like that? Maybe because then I already know about stuff like these "routine atrocities" reported by The Nation and can try to prevent it happening again.

Thanks for posting this, and for the link to the Nation story. The Nation interviews are important enough that the story was today's lead, front-page article in The Independent.
It's not so much a literary reference, but because of a strange story today about the Queen and the BBC, there was some coverage of her (unrelated) visit to Passchendaele in Belgium.
