I'm a poet / essayist / memoirist/
journalist (in the sense of keeping a journal, not of working for a newspaper) and it occurred to me that a blog fits in with all that. If Montaigne, father of the essay, were alive today, he'd keep a blog. This is my self-portrait as frustrated artist who can't believe she's not famous yet. (And because it's part of my artistic endeavor, the whole damn thing is copyrighted. All rights reserved.)

Happy Halloween

I came very close to dressing up today as Hester Prynne, the needle-wielding adulteress from The Scarlet Letter. I wore the costume to a recent Halloween party, and my colleagues thought it was funny and tried to convince me to teach in the outfit, but I just didn't want to, you know? It's one thing to wear, as I sometimes do, very theatrical outfits that have an element of the costume about them; it's another to go about one's business dressed as a literary character.

Anyway, last year I wrote a couple of entries dealing with Halloween topics; if you missed them, you can read them now: the first was about winning the prize for most original costume at a party last year, and the other was about my dislike of answering the door on the evening of October 31. Oh, and I also found another entry about dressing up as what used to be my favorite tarot card.

There's a lot of pressure for us to wear costumes to the office today. Some employees' children are coming here to trick or treat our halls at the end of the day and we're supposed to be "getting into the spirit." I might clap on that Viking helmet I have in the closet, but that's more than I usually do. And, I'm handing out pencils.

Hmmm, wonder what's playing at the movies tonight?

I'm handing out ladles laden with soup. I've got a cold. And I hate answering the door too!

I had fun the year I went to a church dance dressed as Sally Jessy Raphael. I stuck my microphone in people's faces and asked if they had a secret crush on their roommate's cousin's brother's friend. It was a great ice breaker.

The rest of the time, I haul out my trusty Pink Ladies jacket from my high school production of Grease.

Next year I'm going to dress up like a Hutterite and, if I can get a few others to do the same, we'll all go to Walmart and stuff merchandise up our dresses, then leave in a huddle. Because that's what they do. Truly story, Holly. Hutterites shoplift like crazy! I've seen it, I tell you!

Reese! So good to hear from you. I hope grad school is going well, and the movie reviews too.

You might enjoy this take on Hester Prynne.

Nice. Thanks.
