I'm a poet / essayist / memoirist/
journalist (in the sense of keeping a journal, not of working for a newspaper) and it occurred to me that a blog fits in with all that. If Montaigne, father of the essay, were alive today, he'd keep a blog. This is my self-portrait as frustrated artist who can't believe she's not famous yet. (And because it's part of my artistic endeavor, the whole damn thing is copyrighted. All rights reserved.)

Home Again, Again

I'm home. The flight home was uneventful, which is exactly how I like my flights. My house and all my stuff are fine, which is exactly how I like my house and all my stuff. The conference was fabulous (more on that later), which is how I prefer my conferences, and I'm already trying to think up something to present on next time.

One nice thing is that when I got home, several of my plants were in full bloom. I have an azalea so heavy with deep pink blossoms you almost can't see any greenery. My rhododendron and looks fabulous, as does a bunch of chives--I guess most people don't typically think of chives as decorative plants but they've got these cool fuzzy purple blossoms that I quite like. Purple is one of my favorite color for flowers: last year I planted lupine and purple columbine, both of which are healthy, established and blooming right now. The first plant I see when I walk out the back door is this vine thing (I can't for the life of me remember the name of it) climbing a trellis by my garage--it's covered with deep purple star-shaped flowers. And I finally know what color my irises are! Last year a friend gave me some cuttings from her garden but she couldn't remember what color they were. I was hoping they'd be dark purple, but they're a deep gold, almost brown--it's very dramatic and pretty, and contrasts with all the purple very nicely.

The only disappointment in the whole matter of my garden--and it's not a cause for weeping and wailing, I know, but it is kind of a drag--is that I'm leaving again in a few days, to go on a nice long vacation that will involve visits with both friends and family, and when I get back two weeks later, all these really cool plants will be done blooming for this year, and I won't get to appreciate them again until 2007. I guess next year I shouldn't plan two trips back to back, and shouldn't make one of them so long.

P.S. Now that I'm home and can manage my spam comments, I've turned the comments back on, in case anyone was dying to say something about Riley or anything else I've mentioned recently.

Welcome home! It's good to have you back.

Are chives still good in baked potatoes after the chives have flowered, or are they better to harvest while they are still young? Your garden sounds beautiful; you make me want to learn how not to kill plants (as usually happens when I'm responsible for them) and try my hand at the dirt and worms and seeds thing.

Welome back to your home and garden! I'll be taking off myself soon for the Mainland, now that it's warm again. Can't stand winter weather any more.

Welcome back!!!

P.S. I'll return soon (I hope) to discuss BUFFY!

I'm not sure if this is the best place for this comment, since it speaks to your last three posts, but here goes...

In respect to Riley, I confess I’m one of those who believes he leans toward the bland side, and at the time, I was relieved when the door opened for Spike. However, when I view the series as a whole, I appreciate Riley so much more. I love the compare/contrast between Angel/Riley/Spike. The fact that Buffy's lovers are so different (and each has its own fan base) speaks well of the series.

I definitely agree that the exit of Riley was handled poorly. It seemed like the writers just didn’t know what to do with him (as if they had already moved on emotionally to Spike) – at the expense of Buffy and the show.

P.S. I’m so glad to hear you reveled in the joy of being a nerd - and a sing-a-long, hehe!

I agree--though even as a Riley fan, I have to say I've never met anyone who thinks Buffy should have ended up with him. I wish Willow & Tara could have lived happily ever after (or that Tara at least had not been killed) and that Xander and Anya could have actually gotten married, but I think it was the right thing for Buffy to be alone at the end--she was indeed still cookie dough.

Yes! I agree completely. Willow & Tara - what a mistake to kill Tara! WRONG. And why couldn't Xander & Anya be repaired? Even if the actress wanted to leave the show, the writers shouldn't have allowed that to dictate the storyline. X & A could still have experienced a real and meaningful reconciliation.

Well, I definitely have my issues with season 6 & 7!

I like that you're a Riley fan. I think Riley is the "best" boyfriend, but that doesn't mean he makes for the best story - ;)

perhaps the vine with the purple star-shaped flowers is a clematis?

I have a clematis vine climbing up the wall by my front door. it always cheers me when i approach my front stoop.

Jana--yes! It's a clematis! Thank you. I was going nuts trying to remember the name--I make a point of trying to remember the plants I plant--but it just wasn't coming back.
